Ever wondered what actually happens when a homoeopathic medicine is prepared? It isn’t just diluted — it’s shaken. Vigorously, and in a very specific way. We, the Homoeopaths call this process “dynamisation” or “potentisation,” and it’s one of the most fascinating — and most questioned — ideas in the entire system.
Dynamisation, or potentisation, has been an integral part of homoeopathic pharmacy since the time of Samuel Hahnemann. In §269 of the Organon of Medicine, Hahnemann described the process of serial dilution combined with trituration and succussion as a means of developing and manifesting the medicinal powers of substances. For more than two centuries, this concept has stimulated discussion, experimentation and scientific inquiry into what may occur during the process of dynamisation.
But what happens to a medicinal preparation when it undergoes serial dilution and succussion? Can measurable physical or chemical changes occur even when the original substance is diluted beyond the conventional limits of chemical detection? And, if such changes exist, could they help us understand the distinctive characteristics attributed to different homoeopathic preparations?
The presentation “Scientificity Behind Dynamisation” by Dr. R. Valavan takes a journey through these questions by tracing the evolution of basic research into homoeopathic dilutions and potentisation. It brings together historical investigations dating back to the early twentieth century, including attempts to identify measurable changes using photographic, spectrophotometric, dielectric, nuclear magnetic resonance, Raman spectroscopy and other physical or biochemical approaches.
The presentation then moves towards more recent developments in this field, particularly investigations reporting the presence of nanostructures/nanoparticles associated with nanobubbles and the observation of electromagnetic signals from highly diluted aqueous preparations. These findings represent interesting developments in the continuing effort to identify physical characteristics that may be associated with homoeopathic preparations beyond the limits traditionally considered by conventional chemistry.
Importantly, the presentation does not suggest that these observations provide a complete explanation of how homoeopathic medicines act. On the contrary, they highlight how much remains to be understood. Among the important unanswered questions are the possible biological significance and mode of action of these structures, whether their characteristics differ between medicines and potencies, and how such physical observations may ultimately relate to biological effects.
The scientific study of dynamisation is therefore an evolving field. The journey from Hahnemann’s nineteenth-century observations to contemporary investigations of nanoscale structures and electromagnetic phenomena illustrates an enduring scientific question: what changes occur in a preparation during potentisation, and how can those changes be objectively characterised and understood?
This presentation provides a concise overview of that journey and invites researchers, clinicians, pharmacists and students of homoeopathy to look beyond the familiar concepts of dilution and succussion and explore the scientific questions that continue to surround dynamisation.
